TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ― Getting into the holiday mood doesn’t mean over-consuming those holiday spirits.

Jessica Kartalija reports Baltimore County Police are reminding everyone to think before you drink.

If you like a little kick in that egg nog, hand over those car keys.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are aggressively charging drivers with DUI and other traffic offenses. They’re urging everyone to drink responsibly and drive safely.

Last year, nearly 12,000 people were killed in auto-related crashes. About 152 of those were in Maryland.

County residents are getting the message.

“Last year, there were 10 percent fewer DWI related crashes than the previous five-year period. Fatalities resulting from DUI crashes in Baltimore County have also declined since 2003,” said Chief James W. Johnson, Baltimore Co. Police.

Police are urging everyone to use a designated driver or call a taxi. There’s also advice for those hosting parties.

“Ask for keys from individuals coming to the door if you know they are going to consume alcohol. If someone wants to leave, take their keys from them and try and convince them there is a safer way to their next destination,” said Johnson.

Festive party-goers aren’t the only ones who should avoid driving. A storm moving in our direction could make for icy conditions.

“We are concerned about this weather that’s coming this weekend, and again we are urging the public, if you don’t have to drive during inclement weather, don’t drive and certainly don’t drink,” said Johnson.
