No. 1 Terps Win Field Hockey National Title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) --Megan Frazer scored with 2:10 left in the second period of sudden-death overtime to give No. 1 Maryland a 3-2 victory over No. 2 North Carolina in the field hockey national championship Sunday.

The game was a rematch of last year's title game, which North Carolina won by the same score. Maryland (23-1) now has won seven championships, including four in the past six seasons.

North Carolina (22-3) won the title the two years the Terrapins didn't win, and also was going for a seventh national championship.

The Terrapins took a 1-0 lead when Hayley Turner scored off a penalty corner just 4:31 into the game, before North Carolina twice got goals off penalty corners.

The Tar Heels tied it with 30 seconds left in the first half on a goal by Meghan Dawson, and Marta Malmberg put North Carolina in front on her goal with 28:57 left in the second half.

That seemed to awaken the Terrapins, who looked flat on offense throughout the first half, and Maryland began to put more pressure on the North Carolina defense.

The Terrapins tied it at 2 when Harriet Tibble scored on a reverse shot from the top of the circle after a restart with 7:25 left in regulation.

Maryland pressured North Carolina throughout both overtime periods, and Katie O'Donnell started the winning play late in the second overtime. She made a steal and quickly passed it over to Frazer, who scored on a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle, setting off a wild celebration from the overflow crowd at Maryland.
