BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport plans to close two main runways over a weekend in September to repave a critical intersection.

The airport plans to close the runways from 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 to 5 a.m. the following Monday, and will rely on a shorter runway during that time. BWI chief executive Paul Wiedefeld says using the shorter runway will not pose safety issues because airlines will have ample time to prepare.

Wiedefeld says the estimated $6 million paving project is extremely complex and has already been in the works for six months. The project is part of a larger effort to upgrade the runways at BWI, which set a monthly record for traffic in October with nearly 2 million passengers.
