D.C. Region Gets $58M Boost for Bus Service

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington region is getting $58.8 million in stimulus funds to improve bus service and create better connections between buses and other forms of transportation.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery grants Tuesday at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

More than $26 million will go toward dedicated bus lanes, traffic signal priority, skip stop service and real-time passenger information along priority corridors. About $19.9 million will be spent on bus transit connecting Prince William and Fairfax counties and Alexandria with the District to help relieve pressure on Metrorail.

More than $12.3 million will be used for the construction of a Takoma/Langley transit center in Prince George's County.
