First Health Insurance Store Opens In Maryland

OVERLEA, Md. (WJZ) -- As health care reform fast approaches, a new business hopes to guide people to the insurance plan that is best for them.

Hundreds of thousands of Marylanders don't have insurance.

Andrea Fujii reports HealthPlan Headquarters opens Wednesday and hopes to help bridge that gap.

The goal of HealthPlan Headquarters is to find insurance without the pressure of intimidation.

"It's just overwhelming. People tend to just say, 'I just can't do it,' and they don't do anything," said Suzanne Thompson, owner.

Clients will be able to pick from a variety of insurance companies and plans, guided by the expertise of independent insurance veterans.  It's all for free.

"What does all this stuff mean to really help people understand their options and get something that's really going to work for them," said Thompson.

It's estimated that there were 810,000 uninsured Marylanders in 2009, and that number is only expected to rise.

By 2014, health care reform will require all Americans to purchase insurance. This business hopes to help people through the sometimes frustrating process.

"It's really helping people to figure it out, and at the end of the day you feel good about what you're doing," said Thompson.

They will also provide lifestyle seminars and classes starting in February all for free.
