Ramirez To Sponsor Md. Dream Act
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Sen.-Elect Victor Ramirez says he plans to sponsor legislation to allow illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in the state.
Ramirez, a Prince George's County Democrat, made the announcement in a news release Monday night that he plans to sponsor Maryland Dream Act legislation.
His announcement comes as Democrats in Congress failed for a second time to win passage of the federal Dream Act, which would have given hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants a chance at legal status.
Ramirez was the lead sponsor of the legislation when it passed the Maryland House in 2007. He says the new makeup of the Maryland Senate gives the bill a good chance of passing this year.
