Bernstein Sworn In As Baltimore State's Attorney

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Gregg Bernstein has been sworn in as Baltimore's new state's attorney.

Bernstein took the oath of office shortly before 8 a.m. Monday. He will participate in a ceremonial swearing-in Tuesday afternoon, then take questions from reporters.

Bernstein defeated longtime incumbent Patricia Jessamy in a hard-fought Democratic primary. He criticized Jessamy for failing to secure long prison terms for repeat violent offenders and pledged a better working relationship with police.

Bernstein also announced Monday that Cecilia Januskiewicz will oversee the administrative functions of the
office. Januskiewicz is a former secretary of the state Department of Budget and Management.

Bernstein had previously announced that George Hazel and Elizabeth Embry will serve as his other two top deputies.
