Snow Headed For Maryland

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- By Tuesday night, snow will be falling across Maryland and it could cause some real problems out on the roads.

Kai Jackson has more on the preparations being made.

The storm has already created dangerous conditions to the south of Maryland, where snow and ice have created big travel problems.

"Today, I was scheduled to go out at 2 o'clock and obviously, we can't get out of here into Atlanta and we could have laid over in Memphis but you can't get out of Memphis," said one passenger.

The ripple effect has reached BWI Marshall Airport, where several flights to and from Atlanta and Charlotte have been canceled.

"We will have our snow teams here at BWI prepared to handle whatever Mother Nature may send our way," said BWI Airport spokesman Jonathan Dean.  "Always check with your airline."

Crews have already begun pre-treating roads across Maryland with a salt brine solution and they are on standby to work overtime once the snow hits.  In Baltimore City, there's an ample supply of salt; crews plan to load it on trucks to try and get ahead of the storm.

"If it comes as predicted during rush hour, it would be wise to leave early or stay late until after rush hour because that's the worst time for us.  Our trucks, even though we've pre-treated, will be stuck in the same traffic as everyone else," said Valerie Burnette-Edgar, State Highway Administration.

BGE, too, is ready to keep the power on.

"We're preparing for minimal outages, but at the same time, we're fully capable to switch gears and do whatever is appropriate for the level of storm," said Linda Foy, BGE.

The last big storm paralyzed parts of the Eastern Shore with blowing snow, but spared central Maryland.

"The one positive, unlike the storm we saw a couple weeks ago, we're now out of the holiday travel season so that will perhaps reduce some of the travel to some markets," Dean said.
