Local Bakery Takes Its Cupcake Truck On The Road

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- You're starting to see quite a few mobile food trucks on the streets of Baltimore. Now there's one that has some of the most delicious desserts you'll ever taste.

Ron Matz reports if you have a sweet tooth, you'll want to meet "The Cupcake Lady."

Christine Richardson makes iced gems that make your mouth water. Her truck has been on the streets since April.

"This started when I needed a truck to deliver wedding cakes and celebration cakes and I couldn't leave it empty the rest of the week, so I filled it with cupcakes and went out on the road and here we are today with our own bakery and our truck," said Richardson, owner of IcedGems Baking. "We started the cupcake truck in April of last year. It's just taken off, really taken off. People love to have a little treat delivered to their door and that's really what we do."

IcedGems serves up 19 flavors from red velvet to 'smores. They cost $2.50 each and they're out of this world good.

"The cupcakes cost $2.50 each, $12.50 a half dozen, $24.00 a dozen. Everything is baked fresh every day. We bake in small batches. We bake a lot of different flavors and everything is made from scratch. The best ingredients, farm fresh eggs and milk from local producers and lots of butter. That's what makes them taste so good," said Richardson.

The cupcake lady's truck came to TV Hill Thursday morning. WJZ's morning show staff couldn't wait for a taste test.

"Our bakery is on Main Street in Reisterstown. It's just like the truck, pink and polka dots. We bake in the back. We're all dressed in our pink and white aprons. Come out and find us there. You can have a coffee, enjoy a cupcake or take some home," said Richardson.

There are even Ravens cupcakes, too.

Sweet lovers can find the cupcake lady's daily location online.

"They follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We Facebook every day, two or three times a day to say where exactly we're going to be," said Richardson.

Christina and her husband Tony came to Baltimore from England about 10 years ago.
