Baby Girl Born During Ice Storm

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A birthday to remember.  A baby girl is just one day old and already has an amazing life story.

Weijia Jiang reports on a special delivery.

When freezing rain and snow kept most drivers inside, Lakeisha and Kirby, who are both deaf, couldn't wait to get on the road.  Her water broke during the height of Monday's ice storm...two weeks early.  But the couple never made it to the hospital.

"I was trying to make it there," Kirby said.

"I was like, `Pull over right now!'" Lakeisha said.

"She grabbed me two, three times and said, `The baby's coming; I got to push,'" he said.

Keilani Joy is nine pounds, 11.6 ounces.  She's truly the result of a labor of love.  In fact, that's her last name.

The umbilical cord wrapped around Keilani's neck, but Kirby was able to untangle it himself.  And it all happened along 695.

"I had a moment to be scared, but I said, `I got to do this.  Let me do what a father's supposed to do,'" Kirby said.

Matt Strasser understands completely.  Just hours after Keilani was born, he found himself in the same position as the Loves.  He and his wife had a seven pound, two ounce baby boy on the side of 97.

It's an experience of a lifetime, one the Loves say they wouldn't change.

"We're just happy she was born healthy.  No issues, she's such a good baby," Lakeisha said.

The Loves hope to bring Keilani home on Friday.
