Funeral For Sargent Shriver Now Open To Public

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) -- The outpouring of condolences after the death of R. Sargent Shriver has prompted his family to open his funeral to the public. They hope Shriver's work will inspire others to continue his legacy of service.

A wake is planned for Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C. The funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, Md., at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington will celebrate the Mass.

Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend said Shriver will be buried in the same cemetery as his wife, Eunice, in Hyannis, Mass.

Shriver served as the director of the Peace Corps and leader of the war on poverty.
