Poultry Giant Perdue Going Solar With 11K Panels

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Perdue is greening its Salisbury corporate headquarters with the installation of thousands of solar panels.

The poultry giant says panels are also planned for a Bridgeville feed mill. The 11,000 panels at the two sites are expected to be installed by September and provide up to 90 percent of the electricity used by the two facilities, averaging about 25 percent of daily electricity needs.

The company says the more environmentally friendly solar power will cost less than it is paying today. Perdue has signed a 15-year contract with Washington Gas Energy Services. The Herndon, Va., company will own and operate the solar panels.

The panels are the latest green innovation at the Perdue's headquarters, which is undergoing a nearly $13 million renovation.
