Family Protests For Baltimore Man Killed In Club Shooting

BALTIMORE  (WJZ) -- A call for justice. Sean Gamble is shot and killed by police. What went wrong, and how did police also shoot and kill one of their own?

Suzanne Collins has more on a protest by Gamble's family.

They want answers. Why was Sean Gamble-- who'd never been arrested-- shot and killed by an officer on that chaotic night?About 50 of Gamble's family and friends marched Saturday. They want to know how more than 40 police bullets were fired, leaving two dead-- including their loved one and a police officer.

"We're tired of our people getting murdered for no reason, and that's why we want justice and we want answers and we want peace," said John Gamble, father of victim.

Sean Gamble's father appeals for justice for his 22-year-old son who died Jan. 11 outside Select Lounge on Paca Street. It was a frantic moment during which Officer William Torbit-- dressed in plainclothes--was trying to break up a fight, but ended up on the ground firing.  Other officers who may not have known he too was a policeman shot and killed Torbit.

"I believe the police should be more understanding before they start shooting," said John Gamble.

"Sean was an aspiring young man engaged to be married, had a fiancee, played semi pro football with the Baltimore Saints," said Nadine Williams Holmes, family friend. "There was no reason for him to be cut down and murdered this way."

There are calls for a federal investigation, but for now it's still being handled by the Baltimore Police Homicide Unit, although the mayor wants an independent review.

"There's a little boy over there whose daddy isn't coming home," Williams Holmes said. "Why isn't he coming home? He's not coming home because the streets of Baltimore are out of control."

Four women were also stuck by police fire that night. The lawyer for one woman says she was grazed in the head by a bullet.

Police say Sean Gamble was struck by a handful of bullets, possibly fired by Torbit's gun.
