Md. Army Scientists Honored For Mosquito Trap

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Two Army scientists are being honored for inventing a better mosquito trap.

The Army's medical research command at Fort Detrick in Frederick announced the award Friday.

It recognizes Brian Zeichner of the Public Health Command in Aberdeen and the late Michael Perich of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring.

They developed technology that was used to control an outbreak of the mosquito-borne, flu-like illness dengue in Key West, Fla., in 2009 and early 2010.

The pint-sized traps contain water and a pesticide that kills adult female mosquitoes and larvae from eggs they lay in the water.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium honored the scientists for commercializing the technology.
