Save Money And Energy By Shopping Green

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The state of Maryland is launching a tax-free weekend for Energy Star appliances.

Mary Bubala explains how this means consumers will save money and help save the environment.

For the first time ever, Maryland has adopted an annual tax-free weekend for Energy Star products.

This year it will be held Saturday, Feb. 19 through Monday, Feb. 21.

The tax-free designation applies to a range of Energy Star products, including washer and dryers, and refrigerators. Also on the list of tax-free items are furnaces, heat pumps, dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

"Marylanders can save hundreds of dollars if they buy a new refrigerator, a new washer—as long as it's energy efficient," said Peter Franchot, Maryland State Comptroller. "We're urging people to come out and take advantage of this three-day tax-free weekend. The 6 percent sales tax will not be imposed on these appliance purchases."

Here's how the savings will add up if you were interested in a Whirlpool washer and dryer.

"This washer for example normally sells for $1,000. The washer would save $60 right away by not having to pay sales tax. In addition, there's a $50 rebate that they're going to get back from BGE by buying an energy-efficient washing machine. So, that's $110 savings. Add into that a $200 manufacturer's rebate," said Howard Cummins, Cummins Appliances.

The tax-free Energy Star weekend is great for consumers, and it's great for the economy.

Stores like Cummins Appliances - a family owned business on Reisterstown road for 84 years - hopes to see an influx of customers.

"It tied in with Presidents' Day weekend where there's already a lot of rebates in effect. It's going to save people typically anywhere from $50 probably up to $150 in sales tax," Cummins said.

Again the dates of the tax-free Energy Star weekend are Saturday, Feb. 19 through Monday, Feb. 21. Tax-free weekends will be held each and every February.
