Md. Prisons Featured In A&E Reality TV Show

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Inmates at three Maryland prisons are featured in A&E's reality TV show, "Beyond Scared Straight."

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says A&E taped episodes at the Maryland Correctional Institution at Hagerstown, the Maryland Correctional Institution at Jessup and the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup.

Producer Arnold Shapiro also made the Oscar-winning 1978 documentary, "Scared Straight." The film showed hardened criminals lecturing troubled youths about prison life.

Shapiro says the TV series is different from the film because it features one-on-one counseling between the youths and the inmates.

The show airs on Thursdays.
