Coast Guard IDs Boater Missing In Chesapeake Bay
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- The Coast Guard says it doesn't plan to resume a search for an Australian man whose sailboat was found in the Chesapeake Bay.
Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Jack Smith told The Virginian-Pilot on Friday that it's unlikely Arno Dawson of Mayland, Australia, would be found alive.
A crew member on a fishing vessel saw Dawson's unattended sailboat, the Wampeter, about a quarter mile north of Little Creek Inlet on Thursday morning. Coast Guard and local emergency crews searched for Dawson but the effort was suspended at 6 p.m.Thursday.
Smith says Dawson bought the 40-foot sailboat Monday and departed from Annapolis, Md., on Tuesday.
Dawson's destination wasn't available Friday.
