Mother Pickets Md. Police Office Over 16 Slayings

LANHAM, Md. (AP) — The mother of a University of Maryland student killed during a string of homicides last month is picketing with students outside the Prince George’s County police headquarters.

Karen DeSha of Bel Air says the county isn’t safe. She says she can’t do anything more for her son, Justin DeSha-Overcash, but she wants to bring awareness about the 16 people killed.

Picketers held signs Saturday for each of the 16 homicide victims with their names, ages and the days they died.

Police say DeSha-Overcash was shot during an attempted robbery at his home where investigators also found marijuana.

DeSha says she wants county residents to come together and treat each other like human beings. She says one officer threatened to arrest her for picketing, but a corporal later apologized.

    Because picketing the police headquarters does what? The police can’t prevent murders, they can just attempt to catch the people responsible. That’s hard to do when there are no witnesses or as in most cases people refuse to give any information on what they saw. Crime shows on TV help create this false assumption that the Police should be able to solve every crime quickly using forensics. It doesn’t work that way, but people still expect it. Unless there is some type of video surveillance or a witness who can pinpoint a suspect, the cops are going to have a tough time solving a murder. This stop snitching atmosphere is leading to less and less witnesses. So stop blaiming the police for all your troubles and start taking some responsibility for your neighborhoods.

    Agreed…people need to stop blaming others and start looking in the mirror. Most of what ails society can be traced back to the overall moral decay of our country. There is no respect for human life. Our kids look up to thugs and gangsters as role models. Parents need to start and parent their children and stop trying to be their best friends. The police cannot be everywhere.

      I have no animosity toward the police of Prince George’s County this was done solely to promote awareness to the residents of PG County. They need to come out from behind locked doors and take back their communities freedom! The location choice was due to the simple fact Barlowe has a lot of traffic and we wanted to reach a lot of residents. AND….we did!.

      P. S. I am not in denial my son did not deal drugs…stop believing everything you read or hear in the media or you may find yourself being wrongly accused! Are you personally attacking me because your parents did not believe in or stand up for you? Oh and nothing was taken…there was no robbery!

  4. toe says:

    if the police were able to be everywhere, maybe they would have known there was marijuana being dealt out of the place this kid lived, which probably has a lot to do with why he got shot in the first place.

  5. D. Bos. says:

    So what, was he a drug dealer that got robbed…

    Buy a gun and learn how to use it properly……..that’s the only way to keep from becoming a murder statistic!! Cops are a waste of tax money!!

  7. toe says:

    @d.bos.
    that’s what i’m thinking. the mother doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge that fact. doesn’t make the kid being killed right, but come on man. if that’s the kind of life you’re going to lead, then that’s a chance you take.

    If there was pot in the apt…most likely he was using or dealing and others knew this. I suspect this mother is just another liberal wanting to blame everyone else on her son’s behaviour. I t hurts when a child is lost. I know. I lost my beautiful daughter. Nothin will bring her back..she was the perfect child. Worked and tdook care of herself and everyone else often…I got that knock on the door at 12:05 midnight by the Howard county police. Sometimes we cannot save our children. We assume they are doing great and don’t see the warning signs.

    yesm OG county has crime…lots of it. But so does Bel Air where this mother lives. someone said, use a gun. I second that. We all have to be prepared and take care of ourselves. If this kid was dealing…well you live the life, then you take a chance on losing. How many times did this mother use pot or drink in front of the kid. Parents don’t get it…be responsible and be someone the child can emulate.

    It appears that all the above do not have a clue on what it is like to have a child at the University of MD, College Park. Having just returned from their to visit my children, I can attest if you step off campus you better be in a group. The community is run down and not safe. My son cannot wait to graduate. My daughter lives 2 blocks from the murder. Her appartment complex has a mobile police station in it. If it wasn’t for the school my children would not be there.

  11. Jagar says:

    Keep letting the libs take away your rights and the only people with guns will be the thugs. Your saftey is up to you. The police motto to protect and serve is BS.they can’t stop crime,only investigate.after the fact. you don’t see this violence in states where carry laws exist.No punk will try to rob someone if they think they might be carrying a gun.Maryland is one of the worst states to live in if you want safety.These bleeding heart picketers should go home and be parents who know what their children are doing.This mother has no idea if her son was dwaling or using or what. Blame yourself mother for your childrens shortcommings and failures.

    1. George says:

      Maryland has some of the most draconian gun laws thanks to a black member in the House of Delegates in Annapolis who represents a district of Baltimore. You can thank him for not allowing people to protect themselves by being allowed to carry concealed guns as does 38 other states allow. And guess what, Maryland for all of its restrictions on gun ownership has a higher violent crime and murder rate than those 38 states which allow law abiding citizens to carry guns.

  12. toe says:

    @jd112683
    if that’s the case, why did your children even go to U.M.? i mean seriously? did you NOT check out the campus before your children went there? and we’re the ones who don’t have a clue? really?

  13. Chuck says:

    Wow! Reading these comments…very dis-heartening what people actual think and believe based on the handful of comments within this article. I sincerely hope known of you are on a jury if I have to go to court. People have this kid selling dope, maybe even a sign in his yard advertising his stash. The bottom line is this article does not present any facts that substantiate these comments and accusations made on this blog. Yet a majority of people present an argument that this dope dealing kid deserved to be murdered because he had weed in his apartment!?! Are you kidding me. 16 murders and no arrest hopefully no one reading this has to ever go through the pain of losing someone they love to murder.

    Maryland’s campus is no better no worse than any other large school it’s size. I mean 40k student body is larger than some small cities. I have friends who kids went to Md@ College Park & they have & are still enjoying the experience. It all depends on the type of child your kid seeks out & who they decide to associate with. Remember Mother’s & Fathers, Flies always look for the big turds or pile of poop. Which one is yours?

  15. George says:

    PG County is to be avoided at all costs if you value your life.

  16. willie man hanging says:

    P.G. county…….Plenty Garbage. That about sums it up. I lived in Bowie back in the seventies & saw it changing & not for the better. Upper Marlboro, Lanaham, Seabrook, Hyattsville etc are all porch monkeys hangouts. These people destroy property values & commit crimes against each other. If you are young, white & blonde, you are as good as gone. Super-fly gonna getcha.

  17. lindsey says:

    If anyone on here actually read the first story on this kid you’d realize why she’s doing this. The police release a statement right after he was murdered calling him a drug dealer before they actually found any evidence that he actually sold drugs!! All they said was pot was found in the house the 7 boys shared it never said it was found in his room. So before you blame the mom who’s trying to get justice for her son look at what the cops did to her and her son. They had 12 murders in the first 12 days of 2011. Doesn’t that tell you something?? This kid did not deserve to die and if the cops were doing their job instead of just writing it off as a drug related murder then the mom wouldn’t be out there
