Report Shows More Businesses Expanding In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore's economy is on the road to recovery as newly released job data shows more businesses are expanding in and moving to Baltimore.

Andrea Fujii has more on where Baltimore ranks among U.S. cities.

The Milk and Honey Market and Cafe just opened on Cathedral Street in November. It's one of the 4,000 businesses who call downtown Baltimore home.

"There's a mix of residents, students, and offices, so we thought there's enough need," said Dana Valery, co-owner.

And they're not alone in seeing the area's attractiveness. The Downtown Partnership reports a more than 6 percent job growth for downtown. That's nearly 7,000 new jobs, totaling more than 113,000.

"It's a very walkable downtown. The harbor is unparalleled, so I think we have a lot things connecting, plus it's extremely diverse," said Kirby Fowler, Downtown Partnership.

Baltimore ranks sixth in terms of highest employment growth, behind Minneapolis, San Diego, Denver, Dallas, and San Francisco.

"We really think it shows we're turning a corner on the recession," said Fowler.

Businesses in Baltimore generate $17 billion in revenue a year. That's about 30 percent of Baltimore's total. Business owners say they only expect to expand.

"During the spring and summer we would add staff, and as we add products to the grocery side, it's more stocking needs," said Valery.

The biggest growth was seen in the professional services sector, making up nearly 14 percent of jobs.
