Baltimore Marks First Anniversary Of Double Blizzard

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Snowmaggeddon or the snowpocalypse. Whatever you called it, chances are you have not forgotten last year's record snowstorms.

Jessica Kartalija explains one year ago Wednesday, Baltimore was buried.

It was a record-breaking blizzard followed by a second, two days later. In less than a week, Baltimore got more than 44 inches of snow.

One year after the unprecedented blizzards, State Highway Administration says they've become more proactive in preparing the roads for extreme weather.

"We repositioned tow trucks, we have called trucking companies and put out email alerts to prevent them from sending trucks this way and we are pre-treating the roads with salt brine so there is a good coating before precipitation starts," said Valerie Burnette Edgar.

While we haven't had nearly as much snow this winter, road crews have been dealing with more ice than last year.

"Ice storms are still tough. You can never rest on your laurels because there is always going to be snow tomorrow," she said.

Prior to last year's double blizzards, Baltimore had never had two storms in one season that topped even a foot of snow.
