BLOG: Cold Day In Baltimore

We lost the wind, but not the cold.

It dropped to 16 degrees at BWI-Marshall this morning, and only recovered to 34 degrees this afternoon. We are going back into the 20s overnight and may only make it to 30 degrees tomorrow - for our high. That is about 10-15 degrees below average. But after we get through this round of cold air, a nice warmup is coming our way.

Before we get to that warmup, there is a storm that will pass by the area. This is the storm that has just hammered Oklahoma and Arkansas with snow. It will track through the Deep South and then head out to sea via the Carolinas. Even though the center of the storm will stay south of us, it will be close enough to produce flurries or a period of light snow tonight through early tomorrow morning. There may even be a coating or 1/2" of snow across extreme southern Maryland. This storm will keep the cold air around tomorrow despite sunshine mixing with the clouds. When this storm leaves us, the warmup will be allowed to get underway.

Our average for this time of year is 43 degrees today, and jumps to 44 degrees on Saturday. We will rebound to around 40 on Friday, then get back up to average on Saturday. But by Sunday, highs will get all the way up to the low 50s! A weak storm will pass by to our north Monday/Tuesday. That will halt the warmup (even though temperatures will still be above average) before it picks up again next Wednesday and Thursday. The weather pattern is definitely changing - at least for the time being.
