Montgomery County Nearing Population Of 1M

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's largest county is approaching a population of 1 million, and the population of the state's largest city has fallen by nearly 5 percent in the last decade.

According to the data released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau, Montgomery County's population grew to 971,777 in 2010, an 11 percent increase from 2000.

Meanwhile, Baltimore's population fell to 620,961 from 651,154.

Maryland did not gain or lose any congressional seats as a result of the data.

A new Maryland law that counts prison inmates as residents of their last address will delay when lawmakers have access to the census numbers they need to redraw legislative districts. Those numbers should be available by mid-March.
