Unrest Won't Stop Md. National Guard Trip To Egypt

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The massive protests in Cairo aren't deterring the Maryland Army National Guard from its planned deployment to Egypt this spring.

Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Charles Kohler told The Frederick News-Post on Tuesday that several companies in the 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment, will spend a year on the Sinai Peninsula helping enforce the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

The group includes Frederick's Company A. Kohler says the unrest in Egypt is an internal situation that would necessarily affect the soldiers.

He says Maryland guardsmen have been involved in everything from providing security at President Barack Obama's inauguration to serving in Iraq, and can handle unexpected problems.
