Postal Service Eyes Consolidation In Md.

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The U.S. Postal Service is considering moving some of its Frederick mail-processing and distribution operations to Baltimore.

District spokeswoman Yvette Singh said Thursday that the Frederick plant has 192 employees. She declined to say how many might be affected by consolidation.

Singh says mail volume nationally has declined by 20 percent since 2007. She says the declining revenue can't sustain the cost of the processing and delivery network, and it makes sense to put workers where they are needed.

Singh says no decisions have been made. She says the Postal Service welcomes public comments as it studies the matter.
