Budget Deficit: Mayor Gets Advice From Constituents

BALTIMORE (WJZ)–New taxes, painful cuts and even layoffs. Now Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is turning to you to help fix the city’s money mess.

Suzanne Collins explains the mayor is putting the people right in her own shoes.

The mayor is turning over all the gory details of the $80 million budget shortfall, and she’s asking people “Hey, what would you do?”

People are giving their two cents.

The city of Baltimore faces a looming deficit, which includes growing pension costs for employees and health insurance increases. But less is coming in the door for taxes as property values drop.

“If we were to do everything we did last year, all of the services, all of the benefits,” said Rawlings Blake, “in order to make that happen, we would need an additional $80 million.”

The mayor says it won’t be business as usual. City Hall will decide, along with any citizen who wants to add their voice. What is important? And what should be cut? An eight-year employee of animal control likes having a say.

“My main concern is my job could be on the chopping block, and I’m just here to get the information I need and be able to prepare myself,” Kenny Tarrant said.

At least 50 people came to fill out big sheets on what they think the mayor and City Council should do.

The mayor vows she will listen, as she makes the tough decisions.

Last year when the mayor had to make drastic cuts, she suffered much public criticism.

The mayor says she will be favoring funding stronger neighborhood programs, a cleaner city and safer streets.

so when will she announce there will be no summer programs. What a loser. I cant stand the entire citygovernment. They should take all the programs that have millions and millions going to them, programs that are totally unneeded right now and take twenty five million from each , or more, and put those millions to the needs of the people of baltimore. So mayor, when will you be telling us there is no summer camp and no summer swimming.

  5. Herman Glimsher says:

if she’s going to let the people do her job, maybe she should just resign…….take the council with you since none of you really WORK……cutting those salaries would help reach the $80 million shortage.
Then, add a 1 cent tax to every alcoholic beverage sold in the city………..with all the drunks and alcoholics in Baltimore you’d have a budget surplus next year and all those drunks wouldn’t even miss the extra penny per drink!!!!
    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

THE FIVE CITY GOLF CORSES REUIRE A LARGE AMOUNT OF REAL ESATE. ENDLESS THEY ARE A FINACIAL ASSET TO THE CITY THE ENTIRE CONCEPT SHOULD BE REVALUTED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH A ASSET. IF NOT THEY ARE FINICIAL LIABILTY.PRIVATE COURSES MAKE MONEY IF OURS DON’T THERE ARE PROBLEMS THAT HALF TO BE SOLVED.EMPLOYERS WHO WORK AT THE CITY COURSES EITH MAKE POVERTY WAGES OR GOLF PRO”S AND THE GULF CORPORATION MAKE MORE THEN THE MAYOR THAT WORKS 12 MONTHS AND CAN BE CALLED IN ANY TIME , WERE GOLF PROS IF IT SNOWS THEY COLLECT CHECKS AND NO MONEY COMING IN DOESN’T WORK. THE CITY SHOULD MAKE MORE FOR ALL THE REAL ESATE BOTTOM LINE

Maybe we can get Shela to give back her $80,000 a year pay out. That could be a start. It’s time to break the good old boy network up.Don’t start at the bottom and work up start at the top and get rid of th corruption. Hold the politicians responsible and vote them out. If they break the law while in office don’t just slap their hand and turn a cheek , make an example of them and let them do some time if its justified.
