Dew Tour Is Heading To Ocean City

BATIMORE (WJZ) -- If you're going to be in Ocean City in July, you're going to have a lot of company. The best cyclists and skateboarders in the world and their fans will be joining vacationers.

Ron Matz reports the Dew Tour is heading down the ocean.

Baltimore's own Bucky Lasek is just one of the talented extreme athletes you might see in Ocean City this summer. The Dew Tour is heading for the sun and fun at the beach.

Terry Hasseltine is Maryland's director of sports marketing.

"It's great news for Ocean City and the state of Maryland. The Dew Action Sports Tour is looking at our state again to bring the skateboarders, the BMX bikers and the like back to our great state and a new destination in Ocean City," said Hasseltine. "We're really excited about the opportunity. It's a tremendous economic impact. You're looking at a lot of media exposure. The tour has gained a lot of publicity over the last several years from the days it was in Baltimore and Louisville."

The Dew Tour last stopped in Baltimore three years ago, drawing more than 52,000 fans to the parking lots at Camden Yards, creating an economic impact of more than $10 million.

"The tour has continued to grow. It has a great fan following. People from all over the United States will make their way to Ocean City," said Hasseltine. "It's gonna bring huge crowds to Ocean City. It will give them huge media exposure, things that they'll be able to use, not just this summer, but for the years ahead as some of their promotional pieces as they move forward."

Lasek will be doing a lot of tricks at the beach and says what you see on television is nothing like the real thing.

The coordinators of the Dew Tour are presenting their application to Ocean City's mayor and the City Council Tuesday. They are expected to approve it.
