Frostburg State A Model For Curbing Binge Drinking

FROSTBURG, Md. (AP) -- Frostburg State University President Jonathan Gibralter is joining a federal task force that aims to curb binge drinking among college students.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism issued the invitation Tuesday in recognition of an alcohol awareness campaign that Gibralter spearheaded after arriving at the school in 2006.

School officials say the share of Frostburg State students who admit to high-risk drinking has fallen from 59 percent in 1997 to 43 percent in 2008.

More than half of Frostburg State students now say they abstain from alcohol compared with 40 percent in 1997.

Alcohol abuse has been a factor in two student deaths at Frostburg State since 1996.
