Md. Officials Prepare For Snowfall

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) -- The Maryland State Highway Administration says its crews are preparing for the latest round of winter weather.

Kelly McPherson has more on the preparations taken for this latest round of winter weather.

The National Weather Service says 5 to 8 inches of snow and sleet was expected to fall overnight in the Baltimore area.

"The area is under a Winter Storm Warning until 7 a.m. Tuesday.  Snowfall amounts across northern Maryland, including the Baltimore region, will generally be between four and seven inches.  Lesser amounts are expected south and east of the Baltimore/Annapolis area.  Morning commuters will be greatly impacted by this current winter storm," said Bob Turk.

State Highway Administrator Neil Pedersen urged drivers in a statement to stay off the roads Monday night. He says crews will be working throughout the night, but that all routes may not be cleared by Tuesday's morning rush hour.

Pedersen also advised motorists to check weather conditions before driving and to allow for extra travel time.

Meanwhile, Pepco says it is preparing for a mix of snow and ice across the Washington region and has scheduled crews and contractors to work around the clock.

Pepco says heavy wet snow could bring tree limbs down on wires, resulting in power outages.

The utility says that once the storm subsides, crews will assess the damage and will first repair equipment that will restore power to the largest number of customers. It says customer service personnel are also prepared to work throughout the storm.

Pepco delivers electric service to more than 778,000 customers in Maryland and Washington.
