Md. Bill Bans Text Message Reading While Driving

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Measures banning people from reading text messages while driving in Maryland are moving forward in the General Assembly.

The House of Delegates passed the bill 116-22 on Thursday. The Senate gave a similar bill preliminary approval after senators rejected several amendments. One of those amendments would have banned eating and drinking while driving as well.

Maryland residents already are prohibited from writing text messages while driving. In fiscal year 2010, there were 208 violations statewide.
