Contractors Must Prove Workers Are Legal

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- The Carroll County Board of Commissioners has voted to enroll the county in a federal program that will allow employers to determine if its workers are eligible to work in the U.S.

Contractors who want to do business with the county must undergo the E-Verify process.

E-Verify stipulates that the verification process only be required on contracts awarded to employers of $100,000 or more and subcontracts of $3,000 of more.

Board President Doug Howard says companies that hire illegal workers have an unfair advantage over those that hire legal workers. The E-Verify program, he says, levels the playing field.

The board voted on the program Thursday.
