Baltimore Police Officer Suspended After Accident

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A high-ranking Baltimore City police officer has been suspended.

Adam May has more on the accident that has the officer in trouble.

Major Terrence McLarney is the head of the homicide unit.  He was suspended Monday afternoon.

Officials say he was involved in a crash Sunday night while heading home from work on I-95 near Route 32 in the Columbia area.  McLarney's city-issued car went off an exit ramp during the rainstorm.  Police say McLarney left the car at the scene of the accident.

The damage is minor, but Maryland State Police are now investigating exactly what happened and how McLarney got home.

Major McLarney has been suspended with pay until the investigation is complete.

Baltimore City Police will conduct their own investigation of Major McLarney after State Police close their case.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld said, "The Baltimore Police Department remains committed to maintaining the highest level of professional integrity.  As a result of a roadway incident involving the commander of the Homicide section, Major Terrence McLarney has been placed on routine suspension pending the result of the Maryland State Police traffic investigation.  An administrative departmental investigation will take place upon completion of the State Police review."
