Traffic Volume Dips In Intercounty Connector

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) -- The first day of toll collections on the new Intercounty Connector has led to a big drop in the number of drivers using the 7-mile stretch of highway.

The Maryland Transportation Authority reports that about 2,100 vehicles traveled the ICC between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday. That's down from about 5,500 a day during peak hours while the toll road was free.

A trip on the ICC costs $1.45 during the morning and afternoon rush hours. It costs less during off-peak and overnight hours.

The 7-mile section between Gaithersburg and Olney opened Feb. 23 for what officials called a "test-drive" period with no tolls.

When the ICC is completed late this year or early next year, it will cover 18.8 miles, connecting Interstate 270 in Gaithersburg with I-95 in Laurel.
