Ocean City To Rebuild Boardwalk With All Wood

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- The Ocean City Town Council has voted to rebuild the resort's deteriorating boardwalk with an all-wood deck.

The 5-2 vote on Monday means a two-year, multimillion-dollar renovation project will start this year.

A proposal that was rejected would have added a concrete center lane for trams. But City Engineer Terry McGean says the reconstructed boardwalk will have a concrete substructure.

In a recent online questionnaire, which people in 2,000 cities and more than 25 countries filled out, 51 percent favored keeping an all-wood surface for the boardwalk.

Work is set to begin in the fall, after the high tourist season ends. It's expected to be finished in 2013.
