Md. Lawmakers Consider Increasing Gas Tax

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — On top of the near-record rise in gasoline prices, the House and Senate in Maryland are considering an additional tax of a dime per gallon.  Those against the move let their feelings be known.

Mike Schuh has more.

No one denies that Maryland needs more money, but many just don’t want it collected a dollar or two at a time at the pump.

“People gotta make a decision. Are they going to put it in their gas tank or go out and dine and eat or go visit places in Maryland?” said Gary Brooks.

This gas tax and other fee increases would pump $400 million into the state’s transportation trust fund.  Right now, we pay 23.5 cents per gallon.  It goes to the upkeep of roads, but that fund has been depleted to balance the state’s budget.

But protesters say a dime at a time will add up.

Trish Date’s oil business keeps 30 trucks on the road.

“It’s going to cost my company an additional $20,000 a year,” Date said.

But right now, with no money in the state’s trust fund, there’s much less money to fix local roads.

“Like our counterparts around the state, when it comes to funding for transportation, we are running on empty,” said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Wednesday, like she did earlier for a similar bill in the House, Rawlings-Blake agreed this tax is a way for the city to get back some or all of the $240 million the state has cut for road repairs.

In addition to the 10-cent tax, the Senate bill would also call for a $26 jump in car registration fees and increased MTA fares.

If passed, the bill also has a provision which would prohibit the legislature or government from removing money from the transportation trust fund.

Vote NO to gas tax increase.

If omally did not steal the money to use else where. There would not be a need for a increase.
All he will do is take it again and want to raise taxes more and more

  2. Moving soon says:

What a brilliant group of legislators we have elected in the peoples republic of Maryland. Just keep increasing taxes on everything but give entitlements to 50000 illegal immigrants, so called new americans enabled by our dictator Omalley. This state needs leadership like they have in Wisconson.
Time to pay for your sins liberals. Now we all pay.

    1. Terri Sevison says:

      Well said !!!

  3. Herman Glimsher says:

HERE’S AN IDEA………….RAISE TAXES ON ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES(VICE TAX) SINCE THEY’RE NOT NECESSITIES AND GASOLINE IS.

MAKE THE VICE TAX SO HIGH THAT PEOPLE WON’T BE ABLE TO SMOKE AND DRINK ANYMORE……….THEN EVERYONE WILL BE HEALTHY AND NOT NEED TO PAY FOR THAT RIDICULOUS OBAMA HEALTH INSURANCE………AND SINCE EVERYONE WILL BE HEALTHY, MEDICAL COSTS WILL BE DRASTICALLY REDUCED…………I JUST SOLVED THE ISSUE REGARDING “OUT-OF-CONTROL” HEALTH CARE COSTS!!!!!!!

    1. fred says:

Ummmm. If they won’t be able to afford tobuy cigs or booze, then taxing something that isn’t going to be purchased seems a little, well, useless.

    2. Time for change... says:

Obama’s health insurance act isn’t there for the smokers and drinkers. It’s for the jerks that don’t pay their hospital and doctor bills even though they can afford health insurance. There are people out there that purposely don’t have health insurance that are making more than the average person. That’s one of the reasons healthcare has gotten so expensive. Just because you chose not to drink or smoke doesn’t make you a better person than someone who does. Everyone has their own vice.

Fred’s right. The last tax increase they had on cigarettes was very controversial. They put the tax in place to pay for children’s healthcare, which is all well and good, but then they followed that up with saying they wanted the price jump to cause people to quit. So, my question is, what are they going to fund the children’s healthcare with when a majority of smokers quit?

The press needs to ask the governer what happened to the surplus that was there when he took office, and where is the 1% extra we’re paying in sales tax going?

      1. overtaxed says:

Maryland media will simply not question Democrats, much like the major networks and national level democrats. How about when Vic Carter interviewed O’Malley? Butt kissing, and nothing more. No questions about stealing the transportation funds. Kinda like Harry Smith interviewing Obama.

Pat Warren, Adam May, Vic Carter, Denise Koch, you should be ashamed of yourselves for promoting the CULTURE OF CORRUPTION and not asking serious questions that would help the people, and not the corrupt politicians of Maryland

  4. T says:

This is why so many companies have moved out of MD, including mine. The goverment there has no conscience and continues to tax people and businesses to death. While they increase the gas tax on the citizens that work from paycheck to paycheck they drive around in their gas guzzlers that we pay for and when they get gas to fill them up…we pay for that too. Take away all the state vehicles, park them all and make them drive their own vehicles to work on their own dime. See how much money is saved then. Here’s another idea stop paying for government functions, why do they all get to have wonderful meals on our money while their are families out there that send their children to bed hungry because there are no jobs!

  5. ratm33 says:

why not get rid of the government vehicles we pay for. these people make enouugh money to afford to buy their own cars. why do our taxes need to pay for a take home car for these idiots.

  6. Doug says:

    I have a better idea.
    Try SHRINKING GOVERNMENT !!!!!!
    Stop raping us tax payers.

  7. Bernard F Mc Kernan says:

No & more No unless there is a law that put’s those monies into a special transportation fund such as California’s & those funds cannot be spent on anything except for roads. I repeat, write your senators & representatives opposing this gas tax unless the monies are earmarked for Transportation only & not the general fund to be squandered.

  8. Debbie says:

To all of you who voted for these idiots, congratulations, now you will pay the price for your stupidity while the “special” elected officials will be driving around in vehicles that you are paying to put gas in and not worried at all about how it affects you and your gas tank.

  9. Matt says:

what i dont understand is how there can be legislation to make it easier for illegal immigrants to get instate tuition but we, the legal citizens, have to keep paying more and more for everything. This is more than just dems and reps, its about our govt as a whole. stop blaming people and work together to make it better.

    1. overtaxed says:

In Maryland, Matt, ALL of these issues are because of the Democrats, they have a stranglehold on power in this state. The CULTURE OF CORRUPTION, and WJZ does not take them to task on the obvious wrongs the democrats commit.

  10. Chrissy Mad Anderson says:

Welcome to the Soviet Republic of Marylandistan. All hail Czar OweMalley.

  11. tylerjake says:

Notice again the legislators that thought this tax was “brilliant” are from Montgomery County?! Tell me why is it that lousy county has so much say over our state? Oh I know why, because they also have the highest percentage of “New American’s” as stated by our Czar. Therefore, to them it makes sense the rest of the state should be stuck footing the bill. Nothing will change though, people will continue voting the same way. The only thing you can do is MOVE!

  12. jim says:

No more taxes!!!!! Why can’t they under stand that. CUT back on the state goverment!!!!! We are liveing from pay to pay check now and until it turns around no more taxes. My belt is as tight as it can get!!!!!!!!

  13. Mark says:

No more taxes….. Why can’t Government under stand that they can’t keep taxing the hell out of the citizens. Gov needs to live on its means like the rest of us hard working tax poor people. If I ran my finances like the Gov I would be rich too…..

  14. whatnow says:

Didn’t Maryland get a bunch of money from OweBama’s trillion dollar stimulus for roads to create jobs???????? Where did that go OweMalley?????? Another taxpayer funded trip to Ireland like a couple years ago to the tune of $17,000??????

    1. overtaxed says:

That money went to new gaurd rails on rt 50 on the eastern shore (which were not needed for decades) and the road needs repair. You all will see that when you go to the beach this summer. Miles and miles of brand new gaurdrail. Wonder who’s pocket got lined on that one.

  15. Erica says:

The people in govenment that are not using our money wisely needs to be remove everytime you turn around you want to raise taxes on something to bail out. If the people in the government use the money that was given for its purpose we would not have the problem we have and it is sad that they don’t have to pay for what they did. The more you raise taxes period the more people will never claim out the whole to help improve business for everybody. If you want to make a change start with the people who are in office that caused the problem we surely didn’t

  16. linda says:

Instead of raising taxes, the government needs to go after the illegal imigrants who don’t pay taxes. If the government also fined companies that hired them this would make more revenue or if they were forced to fire the illegal imigrants and hire US citzens the unemployment rate would go down as well at the US citzens would be paying taxes. It is not right the illegal imigrants end up making more money because they don’t pay taxes.

  17. Mike says:

    Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is an idiot.
If she wants to have money to repair roads in the city, let her get off her ass and look at the waste going on from the city employees.
I work downtown near the harbor, and everyday the parking spaces that are supposed to be generating revenue for the city are being swallowed up by city vehicles and vehicle with a BCPD patch on the dashboard. This takes place in about a 4 square block radius near City Hall and the Cental Police Dept.

Our city has way to many self-entitled employees. Once the mayor actually opens her eyes and start making cuts where cuts are needed to raise her funds for city roads.

As far as the rest of the State, our lawmakers are clueless. Instead of raising taxes on gas to make up the money to repair roads, they need to have the illegal aliens that want reduced college tuition out repairing the roads for nothing since they are breaking the law being here in the first place.
Convict them for breaking the law than put them to work to earn their cot in jail

  18. Spike says:

Let’s see. Take the money out to reduce the budget and then increase the tax to put it back. It’s that kind of like the old shell game… which cup is the pea under.

If we’re in business to manufacture widgets and sales are slow, we don’t just raise the price of the widgets to make up the difference. We reduce expenditures on non-essentials until sales pick back up. Perhaps we should have a business man running the state instead of a career politician.

Come on Tommy Carcetti use your head!… Oops did I call O’Malley Carcetti. Certainly there’s no resemblance.

  19. Rich says:

The United States and its States are broke! We ( the Tax Payers) all try to find ways to pay our bills. If we don’t have enough money in our checks we cut back on going out eating and buying stuff, we down grade our cable bills, get rid of cell phones and other thing witch makes our Economy worst, by not buying stuff. But our government will not cut their pockets but Our. So with O’maly and the rest of those idiots in power, we will watch this state and country go into a 2nd Great depression very soon.
The Middle east will make these Gas Prices go even Higher, so that we ,America, will fall quicker cause we can’t reconstruct ourselves inside, cause of greed.
Please go and look up when Oboma ran for he’s set. John McClan said in many debates. That we need to decrees government spending and earmarks.

  20. Sharon says:

Of course the politicians don’t care how much gas cost’s. They either get driven around in a county owned vehicle or they have use of a county owned vehicle. The tax payers pay for those vehicles, the gas, the maintenance and the insurance. I’m sure when they go to a restaurnat in those free vehicles they give the tax payers the tab. TAKE THE CARS AWAY!!!

  21. Steve Trent says:

If these politicians could be trusted, they would not have stolen the money from the transportation trust fund to start with. Now they want to raise the tax to make up what they stole. How about raising taxes on the politicians. Or better yet put them in jail.

    1. overtaxed says:

Better yet, quit electing Maryland democrats

  22. JEFF PAULEY says:

    REALLY. A GAS TAX?
I THINK WE SHOULD BUY ANY POLIITICAN A GLASS BELLY BUTTON WHO IS VOTING FOR THE GAS TAX……. BECAUSE OF WHERE YOUR HEAD IS AND YOUR VIEW IS FROM, YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT AND SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN REALITY. LET ME HELP YOU. THE LARGEST INCREASE IN FUEL PRICES IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS AND YOU WANT A GAS TAX… WHAT?
STOP TAXING US TO FIX YOUR INABILTY TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS. <<<<<<>> A GAS TAX? YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

  23. cyril says:

ywow you cant fix the roads like they should be,you taking care of roads like omalley did in the city, cant even fill in pot holes but know how to our money…crooks

  24. JACKO says:

NO MORE BELLY ACHING. WHAT WE ALL NEED TO DO IS TO GO DOWN TO ANNAPOLIS EN MASS AND RAISE HELL WITH THESE CORRUPT LAZY BUMS THAT ARE DESTROYING OUR QUALITY OF LIFE, LIKE WHAT THE PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ARE DOING. THEN, AND ONLY THEN, DO WE STAND A CHANCE. IT WONT CHANGE UNTILL THAT IS DONE. PERIOD.

  25. JC says:

Our local and state government needs to take a lesson from the individuals and families that support them. Cut back to make ends meet during tough economic times.

    1. Charlie says:

Our state and local governments ALREADY have cut back. They are raiding the environmental trust funds because the incoming revenue, thanks to the Republican Wall Street recession, is down. We ALREADY tax gasoline and it goes into the highway trust fund. Are you opposed to that? We have to have taxes to pay for what we want, like roads. Or do you think roads come out of thin air? Get real.
Instead, we keep gas taxes low, people waste gasoline like there is no tomorrow, or no OPEC or no Peak Oil. Prices go up and the money goes to OPEC who hates us and kills our soldiers. Great. Instead, we should tax gasoline and make the price go up so that people conserve, keeping that money here in the US instead of sending it to the Ayatollah.

      1. overtaxed says:

We already have gas taxes that goes into a highway fund that was STOLEN by Democrats, so the cry to raise taxes is heard. The taxpayers did thier job, and THE CULTURE OF CORRUPTION stole the money, and then demands more. Why aren’t the politicians held accountable?

The decades of Democratic control in this state has created these problems, not Republicans – if you don’t believe me then why did Obama get “shellacked”? Because the promise of the Democrats is more taxes and more regulation and more control over our individual lives.

Yet another liberal with head planted firmly in rear end

      2. overtaxed says:

It also occurs to me that when you say another fund is being raided (STOLEN) that is the fault of taxpayers not giving enough, and then that excuses the Democrats in Maryland from being forced to steal funding. How about the politicians cut back spending?

Giving more money to the crooks in Annapolis is like giving more crack to a crackhead.

  26. Richard Stoney Stone says:

I guess the politicians never heard the term you can’t rob Peter to pay Paul. I can’t stand the fact that any politician has the audacity to think it’s ok to break the backs of blue collar workers to pay for their mistakes. They don’t care about raising gas taxes as it does not effect them as much. Their salary is much higher than most working class people so they don’t feel the pinch hence they don’t care. IIf we put a politician in office and cut their salary by 65% I’d be willing to bet they would think much harder about raising taxes that would effect them.

  27. Richard Stoney Stone says:

Here’s an idea tax the wealthy some more they can afford it. Anyone that can afford $100K dollar cars can afford more gas tax. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that you can’t keep taking from the poor while the rich get richer. THE SYSTEM WILL COLLAPSE!!! Time to start taking from the rich and giving back to the people that made them rich in the first place, THE WORKING MAN!!!!
