House Members Weigh Amendment To Gay Marriage Bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland lawmakers in the House of Delegates are weighing a change to a gay marriage measure that could win support in the House, but potentially jeopardize its chances in the Senate.

The amendment was offered Thursday to members of the House Judiciary Committee.

It goes farther to protect religious institutions from being forced to participate in gay weddings than currently in the bill approved by the Senate.

Committee members expect to consider it Friday morning shortly before they take a final vote on the gay marriage bill.

House Speaker Michael Busch has told lawmakers that any changes in the bill would kill it, because Senate leadership has said it has neither the time nor the will to vote again on the issue.
