North Point Defeats Patterson 76-72 For Title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Nair Muhammad of North Point scored 20 points as the Eagles defeated Patterson, 76-72, in the Class 4A title game Saturday night.

This was each team's first appearance in the state finals. North Point finished the season with a 27-0 record, and Patterson ended up at 25-2.

Muhammad completed his double-double with 11 rebounds. He also made 10 of 12 shots from the field. Gerel Simmond added 19 points while Devonte Thomas scored 10.

Aquille Carr led Patterson with 27 points, but made only 9 of 32 shots from the floor. Myrek Fowlkes added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Marquis Wright had 12 assists even though the Clippers shot just 34 percent (27 for 80) from the field.

Carr made two free throws to cut North Point's lead to 74-72 in the final minute. But Muhammad got open near the basket and made the game-clinching layup.

North Point controlled the first half of the game, going into halftime with a 31-23 lead. The Eagles' lead ballooned to as many as 16 in the third quarter, but Patterson got right back in the game with a number of easy transition baskets.

Patterson was able to stay close early despite a poor-shooting first half. The Clippers made just 8 of 42 from the field -- only 19 percent.
