Baltimore Area Hotel Guests Contacted By Credit Card Scammers

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Guests at a few downtown Baltimore area hotels say they were contacted by potential credit card scammers.

The callers identified themselves as hotel "night auditors" and said they were double-checking the guests' credit card information on their reservation, discovered an error and were offering a 30 percent discount on the room rate and a complimentary lunch for the inconvenience. To correct the mistake, the caller then requested the guests' credit card information.

The calls were made very late at night or in the early morning. Guests reported the voices as male and female, sounding African-American.  The male voice may have had a southern accent.

Baltimore Police Department officials urge everyone to be aware of the high-potential for scams when providing credit card information over the phone. Police say never give your credit card account number out over the phone unless you initiated the call.
