Workers Being Recalled At Sparrows Point

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Many laid-off employees at the Sparrows Point steel mill will be returning to work as plans move forward to restart the plant's blast furnace.

The plant manager and the head of the local steel workers union sent a letter Thursday, saying the hot mill will begin production shortly after the furnace is restarted in May.

It is unclear how many of the 1,000 laid-off workers would be called back to the job.

Severstal, current owner of the plan, shut part of it down in the poor economy. The Renco Group is slated to take over as the new owner of the company soon.
