6 Firefighters Injured Battling Mansion Fire

HUNTINGTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A nine-bedroom, $2 million mansion on the Patuxent River has been destroyed in a blaze that left several firefighters injured.

Calvert County fire officials say six volunteer firefighters were hospitalized after battling the fire early Sunday. One was in serious condition.

The five people inside the Huntingtown home were able to escape safely.

Assistant chief Michael Montgomery says the blaze may have started in a basement fireplace. He says a chimney collapsed through the second floor, bringing down part of the roof. He says it was an "extremely dangerous situation" for firefighters.

Montgomery adds that a lack of fire hydrants near the house further hindered firefighters.
