ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Gov. Martin O’Malley’s plan to make state utilities buy offshore wind energy may have to wait a year.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Thomas “Mac” Middleton, D-Charles, said Tuesday that concerns about costs have prompted talk of studying the governor’s proposal for a year before approving anything.

O’Malley’s proposal would mandate state utilities enter an agreement to buy energy generated by wind turbines off the coast of Maryland.

Activists rallied in front of the State House Monday night and O’Malley has planned a news conference Wednesday as they attempt to shake loose the bill before the General Assembly finishes its work in three weeks.
