Police ID Officer, Man He Shot At Shopping Center

ASPEN HILL, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County police have released the name of the man shot by an officer outside an Aspen Hill shopping center, as well as the officer's name.

Police say Carlos McDonald, 32, of Silver Spring will face charges including first- and second-degree assault. Officer Donald Hayes, who shot him, is on routine administrative leave.

Police say Hayes shot McDonald in the arm, leg and hip shortly before noon Saturday after McDonald approached the officer with the broken-off top portion of a thick glass jug. The officer had used an electronic stun gun before firing his handgun, but McDonald was seemingly unaffected by that device.

McDonald remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Hayes is a patrol officer who's been with the department for 3 1/2 years.
