Cardin Seeks National Alert For Slain Officers

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin is announcing the introduction of a bill that would create a nationwide alert system after a law enforcement officer is injured or killed.

Cardin is scheduled to appear Monday at a Fraternal Order of Police lodge in Upper Marlboro to announce the National Blue Alert Act. The superintendent of the Maryland State Police and other law enforcement officials are also expected to attend.

The act is modeled on a system already in place in Maryland and about a half dozen other states. It's similar to the nationwide Amber Alert system used for abducted children.
