Md. Senate Works On State Budget
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Senate is working on the state's $34 billion budget.
The Senate on Tuesday adopted some changes to budget legislation already approved by the House.
Both chambers want to double a surcharge on filing land records to $40. The Senate voted to phase out the increase in two years, instead of the five years approved by the House.
The Senate is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. to consider more amendments.
One of the biggest budget differences that the Senate is considering is legislation to raise the state's alcohol tax 3 percent over three years. That move would generate an estimated $90 million.
Differences between the two chambers will have to be worked out later in the session, which adjourns April 11.
