O'Malley To Sign BPA Ban In Formula Containers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland is on track to become the third state to ban the chemical bisphenol-A from infant formula containers. 

Shaun Adamec, a spokesman for Gov. Martin O'Malley, said Tuesday the governor plans to sign the legislation. 

The Senate passed a bill sponsored by Sen. Brian Frosh Monday night. The House passed a similar bill sponsored by Delegate Jim Hubbard over the weekend. 

Both bills would ban the chemical in formula containers by 2014. 

Maryland banned BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups last year. The chemical is still used in the lining of cans. 

Federal health agencies have said research shows cause for concern over the chemical's potential effect on children, but the federal government has not banned the chemical from baby bottles or infant formula.
