Craigslist Killer Made Stop In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ)— Police release chilling new evidence in the case of the so-called Craigslist killer.
Phillip Markoff traveled to Baltimore in the midst of his violent crime spree.
Kai Jackson explains the trip was part of his secret double life.
Police say Markoff met his victims through the web site, Craigslist.
"There was a dark and sinister side he took to the grave with him," said Dan Conley, Suffolk County district attorney.
The only thing investigators say they just don't know about Phillip Markoff's crime spree is why.
But two years after it began they are releasing the evidence, including their interview with him after he was arrested.
During the violent crime spree, Markoff went about the days just like anyone else—going to class, studying, even spending a holiday in Maryland.
Police say hours after Markoff robbed a woman at gunpoint at a Boston hotel, he jumped on a flight to Baltimore and spent Passover with his grandparents.
Two days later, police say Markoff murdered Julissa Brissman inside a Boston hotel.
When officers tracked him down, police saw blood on his shoes.
"There were blood stains from the woman he murdered," Conley said. "He had Julissa's blood on him when we took him into custody."
Investigators also found the gun used to kill her hidden in a medical book in his home, along with the victim's underwear, a knife, incriminating emails and disposable phones.
Prosecutors say he planned to rob Brissman, but for some reason killed her.
"If he had just turned around and left he would never have been caught. Instead he chose to pull the trigger," Conley said.
Markoff was in medical school at Boston University before his arrest and was engaged to be married.
He committed suicide in jail last summer.
