Man Charged In Car Rental Scheme Due In Court

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore man charged in a car rental scheme that authorities believe duped more than 1,500 people is due in court.

Lamondes Williams faces a detention hearing Friday afternoon in federal court.

Williams and co-defendant Erica Brown are charged with wire fraud.

They're accused of running a car rental scheme that targeted people who had bad credit or no credit with promises of low daily rates. Officials say the alleged victims were tricked into signing what they thought were long-term leases with options to buy. The agreements were actually good for only a couple days, and the rental agencies then tried to get the cars back and collect late fees.
