Baltimore's Hotels & Restaurants Expect To Score Big On Opening Day

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As Camden Yards gets ready for Opening Day, Baltimore's hotels and restaurants are, too.

Gigi Barnett reports this year they're expecting many guests and big profits, despite a slow economy.

Before and after fans fill up Camden Yards, they fill up Baltimore's restaurants and hotels.

As the Orioles' Opening Day approaches, hotel room and restaurant reservations are going fast.

"Every time the O's season starts, it's excitement," said Marcus Garner, B&O American Brasserie.

The B&O Brasserie is not far from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The restaurant has already expanded its menu for hungry fans.

"A lot of the items on the menu are quick items--lots of finger foods and lots of housemade products, as well," said Garner.

Businesses say if last year's season is any indication, they'll do well this year. For the entire season, more than 1.7 people came to the stadium, and 31 percent of those fans were out-of-town guests.

"We definitely see an impact, especially over the more high-profile teams, such as the Red Sox and the Yankees," said John Stowell, Intercontinental Hotel.

When it comes to the rest of the Orioles season, hotels and restaurants say their guest list will wax and wane, depending on whom the Orioles are playing.

"We get an influx of not only Orioles fans, but fans from other teams that come and stay and want the Camden Yards experience," said Stowell.

Experts say a small family could spend more than $170 on a day at the ballpark. That includes tickets, food and memorabilia.
