Man Found Mentally Ill In Attack On Son

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Frederick man is getting a mental-health evaluation but no jail time after he was found not criminally responsible for a near-fatal attack on his 19-month-old son.

Alton Ambush, 34, was convicted Tuesday of second-degree assault for squeezing the toddler until he turned blue and lost consciousness last September.

Judge Oliver Cejka then found Ambush not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder at the time of the attack.

The finding was based on a report by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Cejka ordered an evaluation to determine whether Ambush is a danger to himself or others.

He also ordered Ambush to continue mental health counseling, take prescribed medications and avoid unsupervised contact with children under 18.
