Fed Shutdown Could Affect Potomac River Cleanup
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The looming federal government shutdown could reduce the amount of trash that volunteers haul from the Potomac River watershed this weekend.
The Washington-based Alice Ferguson Foundation is sponsoring Saturday's cleanup. The foundation says a federal shutdown would require volunteers to cancel or postpone cleanups on national parkland in the four watershed states and the District of Columbia.
That's because the parks won't be open, and there may be no workers to dispose of trash bags in the national parks or the federal city.
Coordinator Becky Horner says a shutdown would affect 84 of the approximately 420 cleanup sites in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
