Towson University Dance Team Wins 13th Straight National Championship

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — Towson University's Dance Team has hit lucky number 13. They've won another National Championship, a trend unbroken for 13 straight years.

Even though they'll soon be losing some key dancers, Andrea Fujii explains how they plan to win again next year.

No superstitions here, Towson University's Dance Team just returned from Daytona after winning their 13th straight Division I National Title.

"I can't imagine anyone who has ever won 13 straight. It's pretty unprecedented that we've had such good luck," Coach Tom Cascella said.

They've held the crown since 1999, a daunting standard to live up to for the eight newbies on the 16-member team.

"It's definitely a little intimidating because you don't want to mess up and ruin everything for everybody else," said Maria Montemayor, a member of the dance team.

The team says their secret is a hard work ethic -- practicing long hours with constantly changing choreography.

"It's all about precision. Everyone being at the exact position with their arms and feet," Coach Laura King said.

"There's always rough spots but in the end we pulled it together and came together as a team," said dancer Amanda Carluccio.

With the support from coaches, alums, and the dancers, the 15 other teams didn't stand a chance.

"They go out there, hit it on the floor and do their best each time. They just leave their heart and soul out on the floor," Carluccio said.

The team will be losing six seniors next year, but coaches say they're looking forward to new talent. Tryouts are later this week.

The National Dance Alliance Collegiate Championships is the largest one of its kind in the world.
